The New York Times has a rather meandering story which touches on the fact that the United States has pretty much caught up with Europe in terms of mobile data usage: “The data revenue for American cellular carriers grew at an annual rate of more than 70 percent in the first half of last year. In the third quarter, Verizon Wireless, Cingular and Sprint each crossed $1 billion a quarter in data revenue for the first time. They were ranked fourth, fifth and seventh in the world in data revenue for the first nine months of the year…”We’ve basically caught up with Europe,” said Roger Entner, a telecommunications industry analyst with Ovum Research.”
The article also says that while Japanse and Korean companies have moved almost half of their customer to 3G networks the US is only about a year behind that — leading to the unavoidable assumption that analysts think almost half of US mobile users will be on 3G by 2008.
There’s also paragraphs on gadgets, with the inevitable mention of the suspected Apple phone, although the paper has the good sense to note that Apple isn’t going to get a clear run at the mobile handset market… “Apple is about to touch off a nuclear war,” said Paul Mercer, a software designer and president of Iventor, a designer of software for hand-helds based in Palo Alto, Calif. “The Nokias and the Motorolas will have to respond.” Nokia and Motorola (each of them are only one company) as well as all the other handset manufacturers have been responding to new handsets for more than a decade, and while they’ll look at the Apple product pretty closely, they’d do that for almost any new entrant.
