Rediff Launches Stock Site 'Moneywise' In Beta

Rediff has launched ‘Moneywise‘, a stocks related site, currently in beta. It’s a spiffy looking site, with a clean and usable interface. The information isn’t any different from what you get on most stock related sites – BSE and NSE status, a market report, broker tips, top five gainers and losers, as well as mutual fund performance. If anything, the site is missing a stock ticker.
The content is apparently sourced from moneycontrol.com, with which Rediff has a content tie-up. Rediff also has a mutual fund selector, with fairly simple search and sorting options. The entire site is in ajax and the interface is comfortable. The portfolio page has alerts, lists the top performers and gives brokerage tips relevant to your portfolio. There’s also an indicator about whether a stock is hot or not, which bases its assessment on trends like changes in price, mutual fund holdings, volumes, sales and profits- but I’m not sure about how much I can trust such an indicator before making investment decisions.
I’m also not sure if this is serious competition for moneycontrol and other stock related sites, since one really cannot compete with that kind of cross-channel promotion. Advertising has only just kicked in, with a banner ad from Future Bazaar; Let’s see what happens to the site once/if it becomes ad-heavy.
Nothing pathbreaking here; Check out Stockpickr, which allows you to compare your portfolio with that of the top investors, though I don’t think top Indian investors disclose their holdings.

Update: Much like Google Finance, which the Rediff Money site seems to be a watered down version of, there’s a discussion thread. For a serious investor, there’s not much – no balance sheets, no P&L and Cash-Flow statements, charts or extensive historical data. Not even a ratio analysis.

Update and Corrigendum:
Shishir Bhate, Managing Editor (News & Business) at Rediff.com and Rediff India Abroad informs us that not all the content is sourced from moneycontrol.com. He also informs us, as does ‘Singh’ in the comments, that the site does feature company information including PE ratio, EPS (Rs), Net profit margin, Last bonus, Last dividend, Return on average equity, and also results and statements. My apologies for the oversight.

Disclaimer: I own an inconsequential number of shares of TV18, which owns moneycontrol.com
