Bloomberg has an interesting piece on the upcoming CES conference, arguing that content companies are stepping up their presence at the electronic show — Disney CEO Robert Iger and CBS CEO Les Moonves will be the first media company CEOs to give keynote speeches in the conferences 40-year history…whereas Google won’t even have a booth. This is part of the media companies efforts to get their movie and TV content onto mobile devices and the web.
Standard & Poor’s equity analyst Tuna Amobi is quoted as saying: “The thing that’s selling all devices is the content…You have all these kinds of consumer electronics devices that allow viewers to take content with them. No media wants to be left out of that party.” While I believe that the media companies are keen to get their content onto the devices, from the mobile phone perspective the vast majority of customers want good communications and a stylish phone, with content a “nice to have”. Most people use mobile content in one form or another if it’s available on their phone, but it isn’t part of the purchasing decision.
Yahoo is also planning to unveil some new web services for mobile phones next week…
