The Pre-CES Jostling: Some New Content Services: MobiTV, Korea Telecom & Others

Funny to see how some content services, which have their own PR launch plans, get outed because a powerful vendor like NDS (owned by News Corp) issues a series of releases touting how it is working with these companies. Anyway, some interesting new content services which will probably be formally announced next week at CES (our exec editor Staci Kramer will be on the ground there covering for us):
— MobiTV is demoing a WiMax based video service which will be delivered to Ultra Mobile PCs. UMPC is a specification for a small form factor tablet PC. It was developed as a joint development exercise by Microsoft, Intel, and Samsung, among others. Some more details about MobiTV service in this release.
— Korea’s KT Telecom is launching a mobile content service called “Toest”, which enables download of videos to PDA phones and other portable media players over WiFi hotspots around Korea. users go the Toest site, and download video clips to their PCs, and subsequently transfer them to mobile devices via wireless hotspots. The service offers nearly 3,000 video clips, including movies, TV dramas, animations and educational content.
CyberLink, a digital home software provider, is launching a PowerCinema home entertainment solution for PCs…the service will include full TV services including live broadcast channels, DVR functions, EPGs, and other services….kinda like an alternative MediaCenter.
VBox will showcase Cat’s Eye Premium — a solution that enables the secure viewing and storage of premium digital HDTV broadcast content on PCs. The VBox PC-TV receivers provide digital set-top-box functionality on a PC environment by connecting to a PC via a USB or PCI slot.
