IDC is predicting that subscription services will drive the growth of mobile games over the next few years, with the number of mobile game purchasers in the US predicted to increase by more than 16% annually to hit 50 million by 2010. IDC also predicts that the average price per game will increase by $2.50 by 2010, due in part to the impact of mobile subscription revenues. Despite the strong growth of subscription, people buying a game (one buy, unlimited use) will remain the most common form of selling games, with subscription-based channels representing a third of the market by the end of the decade. “A recent IDC survey shows that 11% of respondents purchased at least one game for their wireless device in the third quarter of 2006…For 3Q06, IDC survey respondents reported spending an average of $13.00 on wireless games, with reported spending inversely correlated with the purchaser’s age”.
