Travel portals are fast expanding their revenues from the hotel room sales. An Economic Times article says the share of hotel room sales have gone up from 10 per cent to 25 per cent of the revenues of travel portals like Travelguru and the travel sales of Indiatimes. That’s expected since travel portals have been aggressively consolidating hotel rooms in order to diversify their revenue streams. Moreover, hotel rooms fetch better margins than what airline tickets provide which is about 5 per cent.
So travel portals are adding more hotels to their inventory. Indiatimes.com will be adding around 50-60 domestic hotels every month to its existing inventory of 1,000 domestic hotels, says the report. Also by the first quarter of 2007, the portal will be adding around 15,000 international properties by entering into tie-ups with hotel chains like Hilton, Radisson and Le Meridien, the report adds.
