Moser Baer Launches Hindi Movie DVDs At Rs 38; Plans To Acquire 40% Of Indian Movie Content Rights

This will not be music to the ears of the growing band of online DVD rental companies. Leading optical disk manufacturer Moser Baer is launching Hindi movies on DVDs at Rs 38 and VCD at Rs 24 (see press release). That’s dirt cheap – and interestingly cheaper than the DVD rental which is Rs 200 a month for four movies. Currently, the price of a Hindi DVD at retail stores varies from Rs 200 to Rs 400 and even higher if it’s a new release. (The saving grace is that DVD rental companies currently give out a lot of Hollywood movies).
Moser Baer will buy home video and DVD/VCD rights and distribute them across retail stores in the country. This will be done by the company’s entertainment division which is headed by Harish Dayani, who was earlier heading Saregama-HMV (LSE: HMV) Music business.
Apparently, Moser Baer has developed new technology to bring the price down for the DVDs and VCDs. The company has filed for more than 30 technology patents to develop these new discs, and they use a new compound and proprietary technology to copy the content on the disk at the manufacturing stage. This has helped us bring down the cost, substantially, Ratul Puri, Executive Director of Moser Baer, said.
Moser Baer is in the final stages of talks with production houses to acquire copyrights or exclusive license for around 7,000 titles in all major Indian languages. Their aim is to acquire 40 per cent of all the movie content produced in India in the coming years.
Moser Baer’s pricing strategy will also kill the pirated market which is as big as Rs 20,000 crore.
