Telecom updates, all from the Hindu Business Line:
– BSNL has begun deploying WiMax base stations in Kolkata, Bangalore, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad and Pune, as well as four rural districts in Harayana. The systems have been provided by Aperto Networks. [more]
– The government has decided to open up the 5.1 Ghz band for outdoor wireless usage. Expect more hotspots, I guess. [more]
– MTNL has announced that it will offer high speed internet of up to 2mbps from January 2007 onwards, to those who were getting the connection at 256kbps. And that includes me. There still an issue, though – there no plans with unlimited data and hours both for Mumbai. [more]
– The Parliamentary committee on IT has hauled up the Department of Telecom for not creating an exclusive band of spectrum for use by the defence forces. According to the report, “The issue continues to remain that without a major reworking of the defence communication network for which they need financial and spectral aid, Defence would not be able to release additional spectrum in favour of commercial service providers”
