Verizon's Mobile TV Launch Nearing: Pared Down To Basics To Begin With

Verizon and Qualcomm are getting ready to launch the mobile TV service in the next couple of months or so, and Telephony has some details of the service as it will be launch:
— Plans to go live in 20 to 30 markets in the first quarter and already has live networks covering entire metropolitan areas from Las Vegas to Chicago.
— But as opposed to full capability of MediaFlo, it won’t be launching 24 channels from Day 1. It would focus on a core selection of popular channels, including sports, news and children’s programming. The selections also will be undifferentiated from market to market, so don’t expect your local NBC or Fox affiliate to appear on MediaFLO just yet, the story says.
— Also advanced data casting services will not be part of it, meaning financial and sports channels that delivered real-time stats, scores and prices for any team or stock, but those won’t launch to begin with.
The official reason: MediaFLO USA wants to give customers time to acclimate to the concept of its primary TV services before it starts tossing new applications their way.
