Mobilized Social Networks Aren't Mobile Social Networks

NMA has some commentary arguing that “mobilising web social networks (isn’t) the same thing as mobile social networks”. I agree with this…while it’s a good idea for social networks to have some mobile aspects, eg the ability to post from mobile handsets, true mobile networks will have to look and act completely differently to web networks to be successful…by which I mean to have people use the mobile handset as the primary method of accessing the network.
Six Apart founder Mena Trott has made some comments on the mobile aspect of the companies new social network, Vox: “To understand that this is the way people are going to be blogging in the future is incredibly important,” she says. “More people post photos to Vox than they write posts on blogs using it. And the natural behaviour with a phone is to post a picture and say ‘Here!’ rather than write lots about an experience. You can’t write long posts as you’re walking down the street! Going forward, mobile is a huge part of what we do, and we’re going to have some announcements early next year about doing more mobile stuff.”
This is the way people are most likely to use mobile with web-based social networks, in my opinion.
