CFL, TSN Sign 5-Year Multiplatform Deal

Earlier this week ESPN announced it was buying a stake in the Arena Football League and that the two had reached a multiplatform agreement but nothing sounded really new about the online or mobile aspects. Not so with the five-year deal announced between Candian nets TSN (English), RDS (French) and the Canadian Football League, which includes digital rights for the CFL’s entire 77-game package (72 regular-season games, four divisional playoff matches and the Grey Cup). The deal, described as a “landmark” by CFL Commissioner Tom Wright, doesn’t kick in for another year but here’s what it entails:
— Broadband, mobile, VOD and interactive TV rights.
— Exclusive rights to host content and sell advertising on CFL.ca and LCF.ca,
— Rights to offer CFL content on other “emerging platforms.”
— No guarantee for over-the-air coverage.
TSN President Phil King: “It is our intention to air every single CFL game on TSN, TSN HD and TSN Broadband.” Release.
Winnipeg Sun: “Reports suggest the new deal is worth $75 million over five years, or $15 million per year. That’s up from $9 million per season in the previous arrangement.”
