For the last two years, MSN used New Year’s Eve in Times Square as a major video branding effort. This year, it’s changing tack and the new focus will highlight its emphasis on live music. MSN is the exclusive online distributor for Nokia’s ambitious NYE plans: a five-city concert starting on Dec. 31. The cities are Hong Kong, Rio, Mumbai, Berlin, and New York; artists include the Black Eyed Peas, Scissor Sisters, Nelly Furtado, John Legend, and Atomic Kitten. The performances will be streamed live and on demand for free. The effort is also being integrated with Windows Live Messenger. What’s not involved that should be? Zune. Windows Live Messenger & Soapbox: While we’re in the neighborhood, MSN Soapbox has activated a feature that had promise but wasn’t ready when the beta launched — the ability for shared video viewing via Windows Live Messenger.
