Mobile Content Doubles To US$38.1 Billion By 2011 — Informa

Informa Telecoms and Media has made a prediction that the mobile entertainment market will grow from US$18.8 billion in revenues in 2006 to US$38.1 billion by 2011. The predictions include absolute growth in most areas (although some will shrink as a proportion of the total)…the exception is wallpapers, avatars and other images, which Informa expects to shrink. Mobile TV is expected to grow by over 1000 percent, but that’s from a relatively small base… US$178 million to more than US$1.8 billion, leaving it the smallest segment. There is a graph showing the relative size and importance of each segment of mobile entertainment (PDF). (release)
Meanwhile, Merril Lynch analysts have paid a visit to telco stores to get a shops-eye view of what is selling and why. Unsurprisingly, data services don’t figure highly on many people’s lists…”Awareness of Verizon’s VCAST and Sprint’s Power Vision has improved, but it seems that most people are not interested in using the services…Customers seem to be more interested in using the phones as music players than they are in watching video clips.”
Some good news is the convergence of music players and mobile phones, at least by parents buying gadgets for their children who view music phones as a cheaper alternative to buying two devices.
