ABI Research has predicted that the number of people in mobile social communities worldwide will grow from 50 million currently to 174 million by 2011. It doesn’t say how it got these figures, but it hasn’t blindly taken the word of the mobile social communities — SMS.ac claimed 50 million users itself last time I heard, but they’re not all active. Reading between the lines this isn’t really great news — ABI thinks most of the growth will be in the Asia Pacific region, and since the US user base is relatively small because the carriers haven’t put much focus on it, which means the numbers suggest that mobile social networks will stay a niche market.
