Vodafone New Zealand has launched a social networking service, which was expected back in October. The service, dubbed Self Central, is basically a blog service where uses can set up a profile where they can post comments, photos, audio and video clips. Setting up a profile and surfing them is free, but from March Vodafone will “charge subscribers the standard multimedia message rates to upload content: 20c for photos and audio clips and NZ$1 (US$0.69) for video clips. Downloading a photo or an audio or video clip from another person’s site costs 25c per download”. Vodafone does pay people 5c everytime their content is downloaded, which is credited to their accounts in $5 batches. As was noted by a commentator, Vodafone (or Mowave, the company which built the site) will monitor the posts for “offensive remarks, “excessive swearing”, nudity, sexual innuendo, and copyright violations”.
