Last week I wrote about Gameloft’s Online store, Gameloft Connect. Gameloft president Michel Guillemot has answered some questions I had about the service.
Gameloft Connect is available in almost all of the 75 countries in which Gameloft sells games — the United States isn’t included in that list, although no reason was given. “We haven’t been aggressively promoting it because we’re testing the first stages out and relying on word of mouth, it’s basically a soft launch initially,” said Michael. “There are currently 40 games available for approximately 40 high end handsets. Most of the games available via Gameloft Connect are our high definition 3D titles. These are games that are 2megs.” Which makes sense, since the big game will cost a lot in data, and run a bigger risk of having an interrupted download. The payment is via a credit card ($1.99 for 2D games, $3.99 for 3D).
I asked if Gameloft expected any backlash from carriers over this. “This is a positive opportunity for carriers,” said Michael. “Until now, a non-wap configured customer coming to a carrier’s website was not able to download content. Gameloft Connect offers carriers around the world to access an untapped customer base. Carriers can provide their customers with top quality content by linking a customized version of Gameloft Connect on their website. Our aim is to drive the market forward for everyone
