China Mobile and China Unicom have signed agreements with the state broadcaster — China Central Television (CCTV) – to launch mobile TV services in China.
China Unicom “said in a statement it will be responsible for network equipment, customer service and sales, and CCTV for content and broadcasting the TV shows”. China Mobile confirmed it had signed a deal but declined to elaborate what its role would be — I’m guessing the same as China Unicom.
This is being reported as a mobile TV deal, but China Unicom will be delivering the service over its CDMA 1x network, which could be technically feasible but isn’t going to give a good streaming experience. This, combined with this report that “CCTV will present more than 400 featured programs, which are bundled in packages at various price levels” leads me to think this could be a mobile video deal. CCTV will also be talking to international and local TV stations to develop more content for the platform.
