Mobile Spam Works, Say Telcos, Marketers

Mobile phones are always on, and few choose to opt-out of receiving promotional calls. According to Idea Cellular Chief Marketing Office Pradeep Shrivastava, “With increasing competition and shrinking availability of investment capital, many organizations are looking at strategic alliances as an instant solution for the present marketing shortfalls.” More on why it works here at the Financial Express.
That’s an interesting point – direct marketing via the mobile is seen as a means to make up for marketing shortfalls – a desperate measure for some, it seems. For me, it’s spam and does nothing for the brand. I think all that money spent brand building on the TV goes to waste when a customer receives a cold call/unsolicited SMS offering a free loan or whatever while in the middle of a meeting, or while driving. While I have opted out, it is only partial relief: a new system of mobile spamming has emerged wherein the customers are called serial-wise. Contextual advertising, like that which Amsterdam based Mads (apparently) does seems more acceptable.
