ESPN-STAR Sports has won the audio visual rights for all International Cricket Council events for an eight-year period starting from 2007 to 2015. The bid is believed to be valued at $1.15 billion. The other bidders were Nimbus (it won the BCCI rights) and the Zee-Ten Sports combine.
The earlier Global Cricket Corporation (GCC) rights (which included sponsorship rights as well as the audio-visual component) and was worth $550 million for the years 2000 to 2007.
According to Business Standard, from the current deal ESPN-Star can earn at least over $200-300 million annually from its cricket properties just by selling advertising space at current prices. That can range anywhere from $1.6 billion to $2.4 billion over eight years.
Another positive is also that the advertising rates are going up by 10-15 per cent annually plus a premium attached to World Cup properties. Also the revenues from other sources like direct-to-home, Internet protocol television and mobile TV among others can be added to this, the report says.
ESPN’s bid was said to be 25 per cent higher than the second highest bidder
