Some Anti-Piracy facts from a report in the Hindu Business Line:
– More than 600 pirated sites have been shut in India in the last seven years
– More than five raids a day have been conducted, since 2004
– 10,000 cases initiated since 2000, with 2000 convictions and around 500 acquittals.
– Not a single case of piracy has been heard by courts in Bengal till date perhaps due to lack of adequate number of judges,
How can things be improved?
– More accurate information for the Public Prosecutors and the Police
– Introduction of the Optical Disc Law and the ‘Sid code’ embossed on discs to prevent copying
Well, enforcement is clearly an issue, as is corruption. How else are discs openly being sold in India? Anyway, a tidbit from around 10 years ago, when software and games were sold on floppy disks: I was told about an anti-piracy raid in Nehru Place in Delhi, during which the software/game pirate convinced the police constable to make a hole in each of the floppies and run a rope through them. He said that they would be easier to carry and hold together, and thus the evidence was destroyed. I wouldn’t be surprised if some constables fall for that trick even today…though they’re probably not conducting the raids alone anymore.
