The International Herald Tribune has an article on mobile games, and how the big money is in casual games rather than more advanced 3D titles. There’s an interesting vox pop from someone who is worried the 3D games would take so long to load it wouldn’t be worth playing in the short time he had.
There were a couple of interesting paragraphs in the story…The bad news: “Downloading content, including games, is only the 10th most common use of mobile data services, according to a recent study commissioned by the GSM Association. People are more likely to use location-based services or do financial transactions on their mobile phones, according to the study. Of those who do download programs, only a small percentage are downloading games. The GSMA found that text messaging, e-mail and multimedia messages are the top three uses of mobile data services.”
Which doesn’t mean that it’s a small market, only small compared with the gigantic market that is mobile telecommunications. “The worldwide market for all types of cellphone games will be about $4 billion this year and $8.5 billion in 2010, according to Ovum, a consulting firm. The biggest market is Asia, followed by Europe and the United States.”
