Jiang Yaoping, vice minister of Information Industry Ministry in China, has apparently told a conference the government will let telecom operators choose which 3G platform they wish to implement. I find this reasonably hard to believe — if no Chinese telco elects to launch a TD-SCDMA network the Chinese government isn’t going to simply let that pass, after all the effort it’s put into getting it’s own standard. And TD-SCDMA will be at a disadvantage to the others, if only due to lower economies of scale. I suspect something will be done to encourage the telcos to choose the homegrown standard, either overtly or covertly. Jiang also stated that 3G services will be available on the mainland in time for the Beijing Olympics, which is beginning to look like a big call. (article from Forbes)
