Vodafone Australia has started offering live mobile TV feeds, the last of the network operators to do so. “From today, Vodafone customers have access to live streams from Sky News Business, Sky News UK, BBC World, Fashion TV, ABC and SBS…This comes 18 months after Hutchison launched live streams for its 3 network, and just over two months after Telstra added live Foxtel streams to its NEXT G network.” Optus has had live TV since 2003, launching it over its 2.5G network. The service can be bought either in packages (“News and Sport” or “Music and Entertainment”) for $8 a month, or on an a la carte basis.
Apparently the technology is doing better than expected (although there’s no absolute indication of what the expectations were). “Craig Middleton, Telstra’s corporate affairs manager, said the mobile Foxtel service “is proving a huge success for us”. Signups “are running eight times higher than we’d forecast“, he said…In fact, he said the mobile television plan had been so popular that Telstra would be introducing four new “premium” channels early next year, at least one of which would be a live service.”
