Nortel And Intel Eye WiMax Deals In India

Some deals in the offing on the WiMax front: Voice & Data reports that Nortel has planned a trial run of WiMax in Delhi and Gurgaon this week, which shall, according to Mallikaarjun Rao, Director (Carrier Networks) for Nortel India, “demonstrate to operators the ability of the technology.” So they’re looking to cut a deal, it seems.
Financial Express reports that BSNL has going to tie up with Intel for deployment of Wimax. Apparently, Intel is conducting WiMax trials in a dozen Indian cities.
The newsflow related to WiMax has increased over the past couple of months, about its features and benefits. It’s almost as if a hype is being created, preparing people for WiMax. At the same time, the frequency that TRAI has recommended for WiMax isn’t the same used globally, and hence Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) services including WiMax might end up being costly to implement. Will the end user be able to afford them? The DoT still hasn’t decided on 3G and BWA, and yet, based on some reports, I should be able to try out WiMax in CP (in Delhi) next month…
