3UK has announced the prices for its new X-Series service data packages.
The Silver package costs £5 per month, and lets users make unlimited Skype calles to other Skype users (both desktop and mobile) and Windows Live Messenger and Yahoo Messenger, as well as browse the internet. The Gold package costs £10 per month and also gives unlimited access to a user’s home TV via Slingbox and Orb. I don’t know how it compares to other data packages in Britain but it seems to be reasonably priced, enough to make place-shifting video services a reality. Of course, this comes on top of the fees for voice and test messages.
“Analyst John Delaney of Ovum, believes 3’s innovative approach to pricing for mobile internet would act as “a bellwether” for the UK and Europe. While he thought the pricing was well considered, he does not believe it will have mass market appeal…”If you as a consumer are interested in using the internet on your mobile then £5 a month (Silver package) is not going to be an obstacle to you doing it. However, what remains unanswered is whether people want to use the internet on their phones.”
Perhaps…they probably don’t want to use their phones like they use their PCs, but if the access is available people will most likely find some very new and interesting things to do with it, things that the telcos won’t think of.
