Online Editions of English Newspapers In India Have More Domestic Readers Thans NRIs: Survey

A survey shows that the online editions of English newspapers in India have a higher number of readers residing in the country than outside. This is significant since the popular perception is that NRIs constituted a larger part of the online audience. The study was conducted by the Department of Communication and Journalism, University of Pune, and it was an online survey.
According to the study, 67 per cent of online English newspaper readers resided in India. Of those readers from abroad, 12 per cent resided in the US, 20 per cent in other countries like the UK, United Arab Emirates, Canada, and Singapore. The survey also showed that readers of Indian newspapers on Internet belonged to over 60 countries.
What is interesting is in a similar survey conducted by the University in 1998, 62 per cent readers were staying in the US, while 10 per cent were staying in India. That’s a clear reversal, and an indication that the Indian online audience for newspaper content has come of age.
A total of 1,132 readers participated in the survey. More in Exchange4media. (We will try to get some details from the Pune University.)
