The UK’s communications regulator, Ofcom, has “published a statement that said many of the AM and FM licenses are up for renewal and an automatic renewal could tie up very valuable slices of spectrum for 24 years, so the time is right for a long-term decision”. Effectively, the regulator is considering eliminating the AM and FM licences to make way for mobile licences, including digital broadcast technologies. The regulator pointed out that there will soon be a lot of other ways for people to listen to the radio, so changing the licenses won’t get rid of the concept, just change the technology. I suppose its no different from forcing TV stations to switch from analogue to digital…
