This is a big stunner in UK: BBC chairman Michael Grade is to make a sensational switch to ITV to become executive chairman (effectively heading it)…The deal is a remarkable coup for ITV, who have been looking for a leader since Charles Allen resigned in August, the story says. This comes in the middle of the ITV possible sale drama (BSkyB bought less than 20 percent in ITV last week, to fend off an offer from cable company NTL).
So all the talk about the shortlist for possible candidates to lead ITV was far off the mark. Grade was CEO of Channel 4 and then rejoined the BBC in 2004 after the resignation of chairman Gavyn Davies.
Scotsman: The move has come at a politically critical time for the BBC where Grade has been involved in steering through complex license fee negotiations – its main funding plank – with the government and could throw its funding into doubt.
Telegraph: Grade will have to persuade staff that he can steer ITV through the new internet age where programme providers such as ITV need a coherent strategy across a range of technologies involving broadband, mobile and video on demand.
