This IANS report (via Indian eNews) on a session on mobile entertainment at the International Film Festival of India being held in Goa, is rather pessimistic:
Bobby Bedi, Chairman of the CII National Entertainment Committee, criticized operators for leaving content creators with just 20 percent of revenues from content sales. Vishal Gondal, CEO of Indiagames said that everyone using Bluetooth is a potential pirate, highlighting the speed with which digital content can be pirated (what about DRM?). Content creators were blamed for undercutting each other, and operators were also criticised –
One speaker gave an example where he was first offered Rs.5,000 per song made available via mobile, but later told he would be paid only Rs.500. “If they paid just one paisa per phone per song downloaded per year, it would amount to a payment of Rs.60,000 per song,” said the content person, arguing for a better deal.
Someone also mentioned that doing original photo shoots for the small screen is not viable in India. Screenwriter Rex Weiner, however, envisaged a situation where mobile phones would be given away free to users willing to view promotional content on them. What do you think – sounds like a pipe-dream?
