3G Update: CDMA Spectrum To Interfere With GSM, Defence To Get 10Mhz In GSM Band?

- The Dept of Telecom (DoT) has allocated frequency in the 1900 Ghz band to CDMA operators, who plan to run 3G trials in January. Interestingly, the band is same as that being used by CDMA operators globally, so the equipment will be cheaper (since it wont require much modification). GSM operators are crying foul, saying that the frequency could create interference with spectrum allocated to them. [Source: The Hindu Business Line]
– TRAI has asked DoT to make an additional 30 Mhz available for 3G services. The defence ministry is willing to let go of 10Mhz in the 1934Mhz band for spectrum in 2.1Ghz. Again, GSM operators are operating in the 2.1Ghz band

GSM operators certainly seem to be getting the short end of the stick, after having been the first to be granted spectrum to run 3G trials. Expect a response from COAI soon.
