Vodafone UK Overcharged For Premium SMS

El Reg has a story on Vodafone UK admitting that it had overcharged for premium SMS sent by its customers to pay for content. “Customers are usually charged 12p for the delivery of the message, and then the premium rate charge. However, it seems the mobile operator has been tagging on an extra 12p.” Although Vodafone could have been netting up to £360,000 per week through the overbilling (depending on if it affected all its customers or just its PAYG clients) the UK regulator ICSTIS is more geared towards aggregators, so it’s unclear if any sort of penalty will be levied. It’s bad when a content provider does something dodgy, but a lot worse when it’s a carrier…
