The Courier Mail in Australia has a review of Telstra’s new 850MHz HDSPA network, NextG. Some content details: “Users can access 12 Foxtel channels for $12 per month including Sky News, CNN, Fox Sports, Fox 8, The Comedy Channel, E! Entertainment, Fashion TV, Discovery, Disney Channel and MTV…(Dual download) Full music tracks as well as true tones from a variety of Australian and overseas artists are available for $2.99 (US$2.30) and $4.95 respectively…Next G also features the usual news, sport, business, finance and weather information with users having the option if watching video clips of news stories for 50ยข each.”
It’s interesting that Telstra has avoided the word “unlimited”, probably due to previous bad PR experiences with the word. “The monthly subscription has a usage limit of 200 minutes per month and 15 minutes per session with additional charges applying if these are exceeded.”
It also appears that Hutchison’s 3 Australia is falling behind. My old workmate Andrew Colley reports that the carrier has doubts it will get its HSDPA network going in Sydney before Xmas, whereas Telstra and Vodafone have both launched the service in recent months. Of course, 3’s big pitch a few years ago was its then-next-gen network, so if it is falling behind the other carriers on that aspect hasn’t managed to get a different value proposition it better start working something out. “3” no longer has futuristic connotations, either….
