Earlier today I watched the live webcast of the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit at this site…Michael Eisner, former Head of Walt Disney talked about EuroDisney, ESPN, Micromanagement of creativity, Disney Hotels, their cruise line, and mostly cultural issues while going international.
The webcast worked with IE 6, but didn’t use my entire bandwidth – I was able to access the stream at around 10kBps, and the picture was consistently broken. The audio was fine. I hope they make the webcast this available for download later, so I can watch it then.
Eisner closed his talk with some thoughts on new media . He said that mass communication isn’t about massive money – now with a video camera and a computer anyone can shoot a movie and upload it. Consequently, the financial strength required for making a movie (and hence content) has become incredibly small. The Internet has made the democratization of entertainment possible, and creativity is the only thing that matters now. It is also a case of pure anarchy, but infinite choices will lead to infinite frustration. What is needed is now is human filters to micromanage creativity, and sites run by these human filters can be counted on for choosing the right creative content for people to access. Once human filters are in place, people won’t have to go across borders to get creative talent. The implications are tremendous. That next big break will come from thinking inside the box, making sure the box is the right size and micromanaging it.
Basically he meant that- get the right people, target the right segment and make sure things are customized culturally and according to users profiles to ensure success.
