IAMAI-IMRB I-Cube Report: Citywise Segmentation Of Internet Usage

Another installment from the IAMAI-IMRB I-Cube report: according to an IAMAI release, Mumbai has the highest number of active Internet users at 2.6mn, followed by Delhi at 1.8mn, Kolkata at 1.05mn.

(There’s also a mention of ‘Ever Internet Users’, but you’ll have to ask IAMAI what that means, cause I’ve never heard of this classification before)
The number of users in small towns has increased over the past few years. Of all the cities mentioned, Pune has the highest cybercafe usage, which is not surprising: the report states that the youth use the Internet more than anyone else, and Pune is primarily a student town; many of the students stay in stay either in hostels, as paying guests or apartments. There was a time when Internet access in Pune was as little as Rs.10 an hour, and a cybercafe around every corner in certain areas.
What I find interesting in this chart is the low usage of the Internet for entertainment, and the extremely high usage in Hyderabad for chat/Internet Telephony. Read the full release, with graphs here.

Update:
Ever Internet Users – Someone who has used the Internet at least once in his lifetime
Active Users – Someone who uses the internet at least once a month
I’d ignore those ‘Ever Internet Users’ figures.
