The Hindu Business Line: After AT&T set up operations for national and long distance telephony in India, British Telecom has tied up with the Jubilant Group. BT has approached the Department of Telecom for both national (NLD) and international (ILD) telephony licences. They have a 74% stake in the JV with Jubilant Enpro, and will be targeting primarily corporate customers.
AT&T’s JV with the Mahindras is again with a maximum permissible 74% stake, and have received NLD and ILD licences. The services are expected to be operational by 2007. The government has given NLD licences to HCL Infinet, Power Grid, Tulip IT and Railtel, with Tata Teleservices, Dishnet and Spice Communication still awaiting approval. Hutchison Essar and Idea Cellular have reportedly already received its NLD and ILD licences. The watershed event will probably be the unbundling of the last mile, of which MTNL and BSNL still have control.
