AlJazeera, the controversial Arab channel, is launching an English language service in U.S., but it has been unable to get any major TV distribution, and instead is going for a primarily online push through its site English.AlJazeera.net and through broadband video site VDC.com. The only TV deal it has here is with the Globecast satellite platform, which is a minor player here.
Cable giant Comcast, which has 21 million digital subscribers, reportedly declined to take Al Jazeera English nationwide last week, and carriage talks with Cox Communications, DirecTV and Dish Network are unlikely to bear fruit before the channel’s launch.
Some more details on the international distribution here. More details on online launch on VDC.com here.
