[by James Pearce] Telephia has issued a report indicating that “more than 2,000 mobile video titles are available to Cingular, Sprint and Verizon Wireless subscribers”. This was the result of a study over three days in September, including both video clip downloads and streaming TV services such as MobiTV…and it required people to go beyond the first screen of what is available. The figures were gained by going line by line through the operators menus. “Operators need to focus on improving navigation and usability. Fifty-two percent of mobile video users prefer to use a channel guide to select content on their phones, and the rate is even higher for younger mobile video users (70 %).” From the list sent to me, Cingular had 908 different pieces of video content over the period, Sprint 816 and Verizon 504. It appears that a mobile TV channel (eg, from MobiTV) was counted as one piece of content, the same as a video clip download.
Although there is pretty good news for mobile video vendors, in that the majority of dissatisfaction with mobile video came from technology issues such as low video quality and slow connection, rather than small screen size (details of this survey aren’t given in the release).
The percentage of people citing each reason for dissatisfaction is given below:
–Low video quality 41%
–Slow connection 35%
–Small screen size 6%
–Cost 4%
–Other 14%
