RCR News: Norwegian software developer Opera will release the third upgrade for its Opera Mini mobile browser sometime this month. “The Java-enabled upgrade will be available for download “within a week or two,” Chief Operating Officer Jon S. von Tetzchner said last week.” The mobile browser has notched 7 million downloads since its October 2005 launch.
This paragraph is also interesting: “But while Opera has yet to ink a deal with an American carrier, Tetzchner said the United States ranks in the top four markets in terms of Mini downloads. That uptake is remarkable, given the fact that Mini users must seek out the application and download it on their own instead of simply thumbing through carrier decks.”
Opera gets its revenue from its mobile browser now, offering its web browser free.
