R Krishnakumar, a senior manager with UTStarcom Inc., writes in DNA on the challenges faced by telecom service providers who plan to provide IPTV in India. He talks about the competition (from cable and DTH), content licencing, lack of last mile connectivity, pricing and so on. One point he made is significant. There is likely to be a new breed of content aggregators – who licence content from the content owners and in turn provide them to IPTV service providers.
He says: “These content aggregators would enter into licensing and distribution agreements with content producers all over the world and offer hassle-free interface to the IPTV service providers. In this scenario, the telecom operators may have to deal with a few content aggregators only to get the content needed for IPTV service.”
