Groove Mobile Goes D2C In Europe

RCR News is reporting that Groove Mobile, which normally offers a white label service to carriers, is keen to launch a direct-to-consumer mobile music site in Europe. This conclusion seems to be drawn by the recent hire of Jason Binks (PDF) as director of off-portal marketing, who’ll work in the UK and EU. Binks has worked at Buongiorno Vitaminic, which has gained substantial traction as an off-deck content aggregator, and Hyperlaunch New Media. Off-portal music sites face an uphill battle at the moment, even in Europe, with the most significant issue being data charges. However, some carriers now offer wholesale data to third parties so they can build the cost into the sale price.
