Goa To Connect The Entire State With High-Speed Broadband By End-2007

Goa will get a state-wide broadband network by end of next year. State government has signed an agreement with United Telecom Ltd for setting up Goa Broadband Network at a cost of Rs 150 crore. It will connect the state, district and taluka headquarters with 10Gbps bandwidth. Each taluka headquarters will be connected to every village panchayat with 1Gbps bandwidth, while every village panchayat will be connected to homes with 2 to 100 Mbps bandwidth depending on demand by the household. On the other hand, every government office would be connected with 1 Gbps bandwidth.
The services on offer include high speed Intranet bandwidth, voice telephony, cable TV/IP TV, educational content, healthcare services, entertainment, all government services, banking services, video conferencing, and so on. A consortium of three companies including UTL, UT Starcom India telecom and Railtel would implement the project. The project will be completed by December 2007 in phases. The charges will not be more than Rs 270 per month for providing intra-net bandwidth and Rs 252 per month for providing Internet bandwidth.
By the way, the government is not spending a penny on this project. But it would get a revenue share at 12 per cent of the gross turnover from first day of sixth year onwards. The project looks impressive. Goa is a small state, so implementation is not a problem. [Via Navhind Times]
