John Bigeni, the DVB representative for Asia, told 43rd ABU General Assembly in Beijing that broadcasters should stop looking at mobile TV broadcasts as a competitive threat, and that it is a common misconception that mobile TV has been “largely identified as the realm of telecommunications operators rather than broadcasters, simply because they are expected to be ideally received over the mobile phone”. He said that broadcasters held the valuable spectrum that telcos are trying to get (although this could be targeted at the Asia region, as it was in the context of TV services going digital). “Mr Bigeni said that technology such as DVB-H changed the threat of new technology to an opportunity for broadcasters because it enabled them to provide handheld services over their existing digital channels”.
