The Times of India reports that the CID’s Cyber Cell wing has received complaints from professionals that people are using ficticious accounts on Orkut to spread malicious rumours about them. Interestingly, DIG (CID-Operations) Rajeev Kumar claims that tracking people on Orkut is fairly simple because accounts can be opened only through invitations. He also adds that it is preferable that aggrieved users report the complaints to Orkut directly for blocking such accounts.
The DIG seems to be unaware of the fact that the Orkut accounts can now be created without invitations, so tracking users isn’t that easy anymore. He also seems to be unaware of Googles speed of response. Of course, there are also blogs which can be used to spread malicious rumours. This follows shortly after the Bombay High Court issued a notice to Orkut regarding an anti-India community.
