Arjun Malhotra, CEO Headstrong said that every time you do something, even if it something you have done before, it will need to be addressed differently because the variables will have changed. Companiess work on passion and money is like girls – the more you run after it, the more it runs away. But before starting a company, it is important to gain some experience by working in a company that allows you to learn about your market.
Subhash Memom, Founder of Subex Azure said that products are an underdeveloped category, and if India had invested in software OSS six years ago, it would have been global leader now.
Ashish Gupta of Evalueserve, however, outlined the opportunity in knowledge services since by 2012, 30-40 mn knowledge workers would be required and 50% of R&D professionals in the US would have retired. In businesses, there are ups and downs but it is important to not lose the passion.
Kiran Karnik, chairing this sessionm, quoted an interesting example of a young man who built a business in Mumbai by offering insurance for ticketless travel in local trains. Innovation isn’t always in new ideas, but in a new outlook as well. He said that the opportunity today lies in using IT to aggregate the long tail of income, the so caled bottom of the pyramid.
