Switzerland Starts DVB-H Trial

A DVB-H mobile TV trial has been launched in Switzerland. The trial is run by Swisscom Broadcast, an arm of telecommunications company Swisscom, and will go for 3 months with 200 consumers involved in the trial. “The service will use broadcast towers to beam content directly to handsets equipped with antennas, as well as third-generation (3G) networks to provide feedback channels that allow for interactive services…Three operators will participate in the trial: Swisscom Mobile, TDC Switzerland (Sunrise) and Orange Communications.” Nokia N92 handsets will be used. The article spends a lot of ink (pixels?) on the fact that although carriers prefer DVB-H over DMB or TDtv, it has the fairly strong drawback that spectrum for the standard isn’t readily available.
