What was supposed to be a quick stop at the Beverly Hills Hilton turned into the chance to hear NBCU chairman and CEO Bob Wright address the Los Angeles World Affairs Council on piracy. (Yes, to those who have seen me at two conferences this week, I am masochistic but since Game 4 of the World Series was in the process of being rained out, why not spend an hour or so on an issue of such interest?) Wright came loaded with stats and examples as he urged the audience to take action to protect the two areas of greatest growth and the ones “most impacted by piracy” — digital and international.
Google-YouTube: Asked during q&a about the impact of the pending Google purchase of YouTube, Wright didn’t mention SNL’s “Lazy Sunday,” the hundreds of clips they’ve asked YouTube to take down or the deal struck to put some legit material up. Instead, he zoomed in on adding Google as a potential defendant. “Actually, I think the sale of YouTube to Google is a good thing for us.” He said Google can afford to be a defendant, that YouTube had too little technology. “Suing them was a little bit like suing Napster or others — not much there,” Wright added. Google “can spot pirated material very easily, can delete it very easily, can trace the source very easily … that’s going to make future litigation very easy. … They know that, we know that.”
