BSNL Looks To Enter MTNL Territory

Looks like BSNL is trying to enter what has so far been sister concern MTNL’s territory: The Financial Express reports that BSNL has applied for a Unified Access Service Licence (UASL) which will allow it to launch operations in Delhi and Mumbai circles. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has sought legal opinion on the same from the law ministry. MTNL does not have a UASL, so can’t go beyond cash-rich Delhi and Mumbai circles. Not having a UASL seems to be putting MTNL at a disadvantage: its IPTV service is also under scrutiny because it has a Cable TV License, but not a UASL. Time to apply for one. There have been talks of a merger between MTNL and BSNL with the government holding stake in both and both operating in different circles, but they’ve had their differences over interconnectivity and related revenue sharing.
