GSM operators are planning to set up a central hub to enable instant messaging between subscribers, reports The Hindu. The deadline set for achieving interoperability is Feb 2007, and COAI has set up a special committee on IM.
Is Instant Messaging going to be the next killer app for the mobile? At least among the younger, spending generation it could be an important source of revenue eventually, even over ringtones. I think it also depends on how it is priced…10 paise per message, and monthly subscription charges?
Currently subscribers can use Yahoo or MSN for messaging those in the same network, though I’ve never tried it.
