Digital Music Bits: Global Sales; Yahoo Music, DRM Free

Global music sales down despite digital growth: According to IFPI, digital sales rose 106 percent in the first half to $945 million, meaning digital sales now account for 11 percent of the total recorded music market worldwide, up from 5.5 percent at the end of 2005.
Price Hikes For Yahoo Music: So reports Om, from next month, the cost of a new Yahoo Music Unlimited subscription will increase from $6.99 to $8.99 per month…this comes after Yahoo has been touting its low price compared to competitors…it is still lower, though.
DRM free music mooted: Yahoo music VP Dave Goldberg: “The notion that a track I buy in DRM is protected and one without DRM isn’t is a fallacy…It’s all nonsense. Music is never going to be protected, and anybody who tells you that is not being honest. Yes, you can put up speed bumps, but the people who really want to steal music are going to steal it. So you’re just making it hard for people who want to do the right thing to get the music they legitimately purchased on the devices and services that they want.”
