Google Earth To Farmers’ Rescue In Maharashtra, India

The setting up of Special Economic Zones in India has been a much debated issue, with allegations of favours being doled out to large corporates, SEZ’ being set up in protected forest areas, as well as farmers being shortchanged with fertile agricultural land being allocated.
I just saw a news report on CNBC-TV18 of farmers in Raigad district Maharashtra using satellite pictures of their land on Google Earth to prove that their land is fertile. Government officials had earlier classified their land as barren, and hence were going to acquire it in exchange for a paltry sum for the farmer.
